Pranking World
Our satirical traits
There are many different types of pranks and practical jokes which contribute to the funny and witty side of this world. With the exponential development and introduction of new technologies, never before have there been so many opportunities to express our humor and ridicule our friends with such ease. Practical jokes and crank calls have come a long way since the good old “is your fridge running” joke.
Pranking has become a part of everyday life; a way for people of the world to amuse themselves. Even television shows and movies have seized the practical joke and crank call opportunities to charm their viewers. Bart Simpson’s “Amanda Huggenkiss” is just one of the classic examples.
Many larrikins record their prank phone call voices boasting to their friends and giving them their 15 minutes of fame. These practical jokes aren’t just limited to the ordinary everyday pranksters and their victims. Numerous celebrities and famous people have been caught out by some clever pranks.
Technology being used
We hear those incredibly eerie voices in movies, television, radio and internet but how are they actually achieved? Well, thanks to innovation, various technologies and software have been developed enabling voice transformation. The different voice changer technologies range from software to professional gadgets enabling you to alter your voice on any cell phone or telephone.
These professional devices let you switch over from male to female and vice versa. The portable designs attach directly to the phone, so there’s no need for additional wires, plugs or connections. Voice selections typically offered include high pitched robots to deep terrifying voices.
Pranking celebrities and celebrity Pranks
Some courageous pranksters have even set out to victimize celebrities. For example, DJ Brassard placed a call to Buckingham Palace and spoke to the Queen imitating the Canadian prime Minister and she bought it, all on air. The Venezuelan president Chavez also became another casualty after being prank called by a Florida radio station. Another great celebrity prank, although not really a call, was made on pop star Justin Timberlake by Ashton Kutcher’s show Punk’d pretending that tax authorities were seizing his assets, reducing Timberlake close to tears.
Another from of celebrity pranks involves the use of soundboards. Some clever pranksters have created sound boards containing random clips from famous persons such as Arnold Schwarzenegger. These sophisticated soundboards are used to call business and see the reactions of humble staff to random comments. Baffled personnel are made to believe they are communicating with real persons. To make matters even more confusing, soundboards may be created using the victim’s own voice.
Delegating the dirty work
There are still options available for people who don’t own a voice changer or just can’t seem to build up the guts to trick their friends or family. Some businesses offer prank call services. All you need to do is provide them with your target’s name and phone number and choose from the many available hoaxes. Whether they receive a sudden burst of frustration or happily provide details of their sexual fantasies, it’s well worth the laugh and sometimes beats making up your own shenanigans.
Live humiliations
Since we all love a good prank, especially to brighten up the drive on the way to work, radio stations have taken it upon themselves to dupe innocent citizens on air. Their crazy calls are instigated by persons turning in their friends, family, workers or colleagues. The culprits provide radio stations with details of a particular situation or incident which the victim was involved in.
The radio announcer then makes contact with the casualty and impersonates some authority involved in the predicament such as a boss, police officer or outraged relative. Listeners thrive on the humiliation while the unsuspecting prey becomes increasingly enraged. After several minutes of torture the announcer reveals their identity and the sucker finds out it was all live.
Who’s there?
It’s possible to hide your identity when making prank calls despite the caller ID mechanisms offered by telephone service providers. If calling from a cell phone, you have the option of turning off the “send my number” setting. Vertical service codes are available in some areas enabling the caller to block their ID. Using a pay phone can also have some benefits in disguising the caller.
Scary stuff
Being on the receiving end of a prank call is definitely a shock to the system. People aren’t too fond of having the wits scared out of them, especially in the comfort of their own home. Countless individuals have reported pranks to the police after receiving frightening or gruesome phone messages.
For example, in the lead up to Saw V, a website enabled automatic horrifying messages to be sent to any home phone simply by users typing in the number. Police authorities issued warnings to the communities revealing they were just prank phone calls advising them not to be alarmed.
Legalities of pranking
Whatever you do, never prank an emergency service. Making this mistake will cost you. It is an offence and you may be fined and arrested. Some other prank calls are felonies under the Telecommunications Act 1996, however enforceability of this prohibition is rarely carried out.
