Various gadgets such as voice changers have been developed to assist the art of pranking. Whether using a mobile, cellular or cordless phone, there are many options to choose from.
Voice changers
Voice changers can be attached to the phone via a hands-free headset or other form of attachment. Some only produce a limited choice of voices whilst the more sophisticated devices allow a full range. Adaptors are required for some older cell phones. Normally with headset type changers, installation only requires DC jack connection to the phone’s power plug. The lower quality voice changers have fewer pitch changing options with robotic sounding voices. Many are battery operated with a built in microphone and compatible with most phones.
Audio Recorders
Phone recorders enable pranksters to make a recording of their calls. These devices also vary significantly in quality ranging from the simple ear piece suction cup, which some people say is totally useless, to the sophisticated micro recorders. Some equipment takes mini tapes and usually attaches by headphone jack. Various recorders also comprise a speaker and have play, fast forward and rewind functions.
When listening to their recorded prank phone calls, many people find the other person’s voice is too low or quiet. Some tips to alleviate this problem include trying alternative setups, lines or even a different phone. Most often the underlying difficulty is the receiver’s phone. Some have suggested re-recording the call using a sound booster, equalizer or computer sound program.
Caller ID Blocker
Apart from using a public phone or typing a vertical service code such as *67 (calling number deliver blocking) other caller ID blockers are available. They prevent the caller’s number from being displayed to the receiver.
Wrong number generator
Interestingly enough, you can even hoax the caller. The wrong number generator intermittently dials the user’s calls incorrectly, resulting in one quarter of the calls being made to wrong numbers.
Accessories against pranks
For those who demand privacy, devices such as the tele-guarder have been developed to prevent bugging, recording, unauthorized dialling and line cutting. It also provides intercom confidentiality.
Tapping detectors provide the comfort in knowing whether or not your phone is being tapped.
